Honors Sculpture 2021-2022 Syllabus

Honors Sculpture I/II is a multi-level visual arts course exploring contemporary practices of 3D art. Students will engage with the history of sculpture as well as a diverse range of contemporary artists through materials, techniques, processes, concepts, and critiques. Development of essential skills will lead to individually directed projects that demonstrate personal artistic vision.

Sculpture

EXT/INTERIORS | Exploring how we present ourselves to be vs. who we really are on in the inside through the metaphor of a paper house.

CRAFTIVISM | Embroidering messages for social change in the form of craft which has been historically devalued as women’s work.

STOP MOTION | Animating short scenes/stories through digital stop motion and claymation using polymer clay and found objects.

Ceramics

LETTING GO OF LIMITATIONS | Abstract underglaze series unified to communicate an intangible limitation.

THE SURREAL AND UNCANNY | Challenging the limits of reason by making familiar everyday objects absurd.

MEMENTO | Creating sculptures that hold meaning in the sentimental objects and the cherished memories associated with them.

CONTEXT PORTRAITS | Sgraffito tile portraits to represent the individual within the context and intersections of their communities.

CHARACTER BUILDING | Designing and constructing original characters that embody qualities that we have and/or aspire to have.

DON’T PUT ME IN A BOX | A slab-constructed vessel that represents the complexities of personal identity.
